Hayley Woodin, Executive Editor, Business in Vancouver

Hayley Woodin holds the title of executive editor at Business in Vancouver, British Columbia’s leading business publication and breaking news website. In March 2020, she became the first executive editor in Business in Vancouver Media Group’s 30-year history. She leads the company’s magazine portfolio, helps guides a broad range of editorial activities, and is focused on strengthening BIV‘s subscriber base.

She is currently on leave in New York City, where she is pursuing a master’s of science degree in journalism at the Columbia University School of Journalism. (She will be joining us from New York via Zoom.)

Hayley joined BIV in 2016 as a multimedia journalist. She has appeared on Global News Morning more than 500 times, has hosted and produced radio and/or podcast content for five years, and has contributed expansively to BIV‘s print and digital publications. She is passionate about a variety of international, environmental, political and cultural issues. Resource development is among them, as are terrorism, human rights, climate change and trade.

She graduated with distinction from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2014. While completing her bachelor of journalism degree, she spent six months studying international journalism, terrorism and political Islam at the University of Central Lancashire in England. She also spent six weeks undergoing conflict zone reporting training at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre in Wainwright, Alberta.

  • Thank you to all of you who came to today’s meeting in person. It is wonderful to see you all. Hopefully you will feel comfortable enough to make this a regular item in your weekly schedule moving forward.
  • Next week: we will start with a brief Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation AGM and then enjoy a casual gathering with no formal meeting agenda. It will be a social – an opportunity for us to connect, chat, and participate in a sing-along. For newer members, this will be a chance to ask questions and learn about our club and its members.
Secretary's announcements:
  • reminders of upcoming events/meetings (see above)
  • birthdays, member club anniversaries, wedding anniversaries (see above)
Special presentations and Members' Moments:
  • Franco Gallo promoted the next Rotary Business Networking event that will be in two weeks. It will be a wonderful way to say goodbye to 2021. A Xmas social gathering combined with the opportunity for great networking, wine tasting and delicious nibblies. It will be a party! Limited availability so get your tickets now! Cost is $20 per person. Respond to the email with the Eventbrite invitation or contact Franco or Carolyn.

As for COVID safety, vaccination passports will be required and masks are expected to be worn except when actively eating or drinking.
  • Brian Gusko received his namebadge finally. Brian was the first person to join our club when COVID hit. It's been a long time, so really nice to see him in person. Hopefully we'll see an interview with him so we can get to know him better soon.
  • Chris Motion spoke about the Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation. He spoke about where we're at and where we want to be in terms of donations. We have three Foundations that we support: (1) The Rotary Foundation (TRF), (2) Vancouver Rotary Club Foundation (VRCF), and (3) Rotary Club of Vancouver Hearing Foundation (RCVHF). Bill Hellyer, hails from RC Prince George Yellowhead. He is currently District 5040 District Training 2021-2022. He spoke to us about the Rotary e-learning opportunities. There is something for everyone. The benefits are not just learning more about Rotary, but improving skills for your professional and personal lives.
e-Learning has revolutionized learning, improving efficiencies in a manner that we continue to  dedicate to Rotary.  The flexibility offered by e-Learning in place of learning and time of learning means that whole education programmes can be rolled out across teams and clubs all over the world.
